You’re not new to your doctorate anymore, but you’re not at the finish line either.
You’ve read a lot, written some things and talked to people. Maybe even published a little or presented at a conference. But somewhere along the way, something started to shift.
That initial spark? It’s flickering.
Your research questions? Getting blurrier, not clearer.
And your motivation? Hiding behind a very large pile of articles you’re now avoiding.
If this sounds familiar, take a breath.
You’re not failing; you’re in the messy middle. And it’s one of the most disorienting (yet standard) parts of the PhD journey.
Let’s talk about why it happens and how you can start to move through it.
What Is the ‘Messy Middle’?
The “messy middle” typically shows up somewhere between your first major milestone (like upgrade or confirmation) and the final write-up phase. It’s the part where you’re expected to go deeper, make decisions, and produce original insights—often with less direct supervision.
Instead of a clear path, you’re faced with:
- Too many ideas and not enough structure
- Uncertainty about what really matters
- Fatigue from long-term thinking with few tangible wins
This is the point at which many students feel stuck, unmotivated, or unsure if they’re doing anything “right.”
Spoiler: You probably are.
Why the Slump Happens
Let’s be clear: this fog isn’t because you’re not good enough.
It’s because you’ve entered a more complex phase of the work, and your tools for navigating it may not have grown at the same speed as your study. There are a few key reasons this fog rolls in:
- The novelty has worn off. You’re no longer fueled by the buzz of newness.
- Your questions have evolved. But your internal map hasn’t caught up yet.
- You’re juggling more uncertainty. There’s no longer one right answer—and that can be deeply uncomfortable.
- Feedback is slower. You might be working more independently now, and it can feel like you’re shouting into the void.
None of these are signs you’re doing it wrong. They’re signs you’re doing real, difficult, original work.
5 Signs You’re Deep in the Fog (And That You’re Not Alone)
- You keep rewriting your research questions. You can’t quite land on the “right” version, because the goalposts keep moving.
- You avoid reading your own work. Looking at your drafts makes you cringe a little (or a lot).
- Everything feels relevant. You highlight everything and write nothing.
- You feel behind, even though you’re working. You’re doing the hours, but it doesn’t feel like real progress.
- You’ve started questioning your ability to finish. Or worse: you’re not sure you want to anymore.
This doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It means you’re exactly where so many others have been—stuck in the middle without a compass. And, if you read my emails, you’ll know that I’ve been in that painful slump too. It’s demotivating, to say the least.
How to Regain Clarity and Momentum
The good news is, it is possible to shift from lost to focused again. Not overnight, but in small, powerful ways:
1. Zoom Out
Step back from the detail. What’s the real purpose of your research? Why did you start? What matters most to you?
2. Clarify What You Need to Know Next
Forget the whole mountain. What’s the next ledge you need to reach? Frame clear, current questions to answer this week, and not just in your thesis.
3. Use Structure to Tame the Chaos
Regularly review where you are. Set 2-week goals. Create a rhythm for checking in with yourself (or with someone else). Planning doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to exist in a form that works for you.
4. Talk It Through
You don’t have to do this alone. A single conversation with someone who gets it can clear weeks of fog. (And no, it doesn’t always have to be your supervisor.)
You’re in the Middle, Not the End
Feeling hazy halfway through your PhD doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It means you’re becoming the kind of researcher who can hold complexity, make decisions, and finish what you started.
You just might need a little help finding your bearings again.
That’s why I’m running this month’s Doctoral Success Workshop:
👉 “Halfway and Hazy: Regaining Clarity in the Middle of Your PhD.”
We’ll work through the common causes of mid-PhD fog and give you practical tools to regain your focus, reframe your progress, and move forward with confidence.
You don’t have to wander through this part alone.

Let’s find your way out of the haze – together.
