Embarking on a doctorate is like setting off on an epic adventure. It will be filled with excitement, challenges, and the ultimate quest for knowledge. But like any great adventure, it requires preparation, guidance, and a companion who knows what they are doing. Read this guide to help you through the challenge.

Starting Out: Understanding the Doctoral Process

The first part of the journey to your doctorate is understanding the terrain. What does a doctoral degree entail? Every step, from the application process to the final defence of your thesis, is a milestone. When you break it down, step by step, you’ll ensure you are well prepared and don’t get lost.  Also, celebrate each milestone as you reach it. The workshop, How to Structure Your Thesis, will help you to understand the ‘roadmap’ of what to do and when (click here to get it with a half-price voucher already applied).

Managing Motivation: Mindset and Organisation

The journey can be long, and managing your motivation is vital. Honestly, you won’t always be motivated and positive.  It’s unrealistic to expect that – there will be bad days.  However, cultivating a positive mindset and organising your workload effectively will keep you in good habits. Maintaining your pace and enthusiasm is partially about discipline and, in my view, about knowing what you need to do next and where to find everything you need.

The Community: Support and Training

No explorer should travel alone. The rate of mental health illness amongst doctoral students is terrifying, and isolation and loneliness are reported far too frequently for anyone interested in this level of study to be comfortable.  We all must recognise the importance of support and community for and by researchers – giving people ‘a leg up’ rather than ‘pulling up the drawbridge’ against others.  The Doctoral Success Circle is my solution for this problem, and it creates an affordable network of fellow doctoral students and experts for you to get to know and rely on. You’ll find camaraderie and practical advice through forums, workshops, and training sessions, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual support on your journey, no matter how far along you are (or aren’t).

Navigating the Peaks: Writing Your Thesis

To continue the exploring analogy, writing your thesis is the ‘peak’ of your doctoral journey. It’s where you showcase your research, analysis, and contributions to your field.  It’s full of slippery challenges and rocky tracks. But reaching you don’t have to do it alone. Use your supervisors and get as much support as possible to provide the tools and encouragement to articulate your findings clearly and confidently.  If you’re lucky enough to have excellent supervision, treasure it and use it.  You may also benefit from outsider perspectives and other support, and that’s where mentoring and coaching might come in handy.  No, it isn’t ‘cheating’ and yes, your supervisor will appreciate it when you start submitting better quality writing, more frequently.  Find out more about how I can help with that here.

There’s light!: Submitting and Defending Your Thesis

Approaching the summit, the submission and defence of your thesis can seem daunting. The viva is billed as ‘the big test’, but it might help to think of it as an opportunity to discuss your work with people who have read it and are really interested

My whole method of supporting people is based around preparation for the viva, so if you follow me, by the time you get to that point, you’ll be ready, and it will just be a fun conversation.

That’s how the whole journey should be – fun, enjoyable and fulfilling.

Conclusion

Completing a doctoral degree is an extraordinary achievement, reflecting years of dedication, research, and hard work. However, the journey to this accomplishment doesn’t have to be an arduous solo trek. I’ll show you helpful tips and introduce you to a community dedicated to your success.  As you stand on the threshold of this academic adventure, remember that you’re not alone. With the right attitude and support, your doctoral journey won’t be just about reaching the destination but about savouring every step of the process.

Good luck!

That initial spark? It’s flickering.
Your research questions? Getting blurrier, not clearer.
And your motivation? Hiding behind a very large pile of articles you’re now avoiding.
If this sounds familiar, take a breath.
You’re not failing; you’re in the messy middle. And it’s one of the most disorienting (yet standard) parts of the PhD journey.

Building Confidence

I was the girl who didn’t fit in. Just quietly middle of the class. Being front and centre of a lecture theatre was hardly the future I envisioned for myself. And yet, when that very thing happened, I understood that it is possible to channel a tiny spark and turn it into something much bigger.
